Turh your Eyes Upon Jesus was written by Helen Lemmel. In 1918, She received a tract from a missionary. The tract was written by Lilias Trotter, and it was titled “Focused.” The pamphlet had these words: “So then, turn your eyes upon Him, look full into His face and you will find that the things of earth will acquire a strange new dimness.” These words touched her, and she was quoted as saying “Suddenly, as if commanded to stop and listen, I stood still, and singing in my soul and spirit was the chorus, with not one conscious moment of putting word to word to make rhyme, or note to note to make melody. The verses were written the same week, after the usual manner of composition, but none the less dictated by the Holy Spirit.”
This little hymn speaks volumes to my soul. How can I see the stress and hardships in my life if I am looking at Jesus? While I am sitting here feeling sorry for myself, I can see that the only thing wrong with me and my life is my perception. It is is my vision that is faulty. I need to change the direction of my sight and keep my eyes on Jesus.
Dear Jesus, Change my perception so all I see is you and remind me that you are always there, it is me who moved my eyes. Amen.
Matthew 17:8 (ESV) “And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.”
